Clean and Inspect Your Fireplace and Chimney
Prevent a fire hazard and keep your family safe!
Before you use your fireplace for the first time, it's advisable to have your fireplace and chimney inspected and swept by a professional chimney sweep to prevent the buildup of creosote. Creosote accumulates on the inside walls of your chimney when you use your fireplace. Unless regularly cleaned, it can ignite and cause a fire inside your chimney.
Make sure the chimney sweep also cleans the soot and rust from your fireplace damper.
Check for cracked bricks or loose or missing mortar. Repair is a job best left to a professional.
Remove bird nests from chimney flues and outdoor electrical fixtures.
Bird nests on top of light fixtures are a fire hazard. Bird nests in chimney flues can prevent a proper venting of combustion gases and can catch fire from sparks.
