Consumer Product Safety Commission Warns of Ceramic Firepot Danger
Bed Bath & Beyond Suspends Sale
by Pro Home Manager
This week the CPC issued a consumer warning about the lighting of gel fuel in outdoor ceramic firepots. Recent media reports have highlighted several burn accidents resulting from the use of these products in which firepots exploded in flames as a consumer poured a gel fuel into them.

According to these reports, both incidents involved pots and a jellylike fuel from Napa Home & Garden Inc., an Atlanta-based company. These products were purchased at Bed Bath & Beyond which has since suspended their sale. The CPC said it has received at least eight reports of injuries or damage from firepots or fuel gel since April 2010.

The CPC did not recall these products but instead issued a consumer warning while it conducts an investigation. The CPC recommended that consumers never refuel a hot product or add fuel to an open-flame. It further cautioned consumers to first look for flames, then cautiously feel the vicinity of the flame, as some flames are difficult to see, and to add fuel only when the flames are extinguished and the container is cool to the touch. Consumers should also keep the fuel out of the reach of young children.
